Funding for Brookline Blvd. Project Gets Preliminary Approval
Pittsburgh City Council on Wednesday gave preliminary approval for funding of the Brookline Boulevard reconstruction project.

Pittsburgh City Council gave preliminary approval for funding that will get the Brookline Boulevard reconstruction project off the ground, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Thursday.
Council preliminarily approved a bill that would allow a $2 million allocation for the project. The total project cost is $6.8 million, with much of the cost to be covered by state and federal money.

The reconstruction project is scheduled to begin in March, and work will last about nine months. It will include landscaping and tree planting along the street, sidewalk and roadway paving and new traffic signals.
A meeting was held early this week for business owners and those who work on the Boulevard to discuss challenges of working through construction. Two more similar meetings are planned for February to involve community members as well as business owners.

this is good news... that stretch is somewhat blighted, in my opinion with the decaying/vacant old store-fronts and irregular sidewalk concrete in places... there definetly needs to be a unifying look to bring things up to date. for a neighborhood as close to downtown / etc. as Brookline is, the game needs to be stepped up .

I agree, Ed, I feel that the mural is a little washed out - even a color update would help it. There is definitely a thin line between washed out and tacky though, so maybe it is better to leave it alone??

I love that mural! But a little update couldn't hurt. Actually, the project mostly includes updates like new lighting and signaling fixtures along the Boulevard, new sidewalks and some paving.
@Bob - storefront improvements aren't specifically part of the project, but at Monday's meeting (which was mainly for business owners) representatives from Pittsburgh Urban Redevelopment Authority presented several programs that focus on cost-effective ways for business/building owners to update storefronts and make other improvements. I'm excited to see the Boulevard at the end of all this.

It would be nice to see traffic lights at the intersection of Pioneer Avenue and Brookline Blvd. WITH GREEN ARROWS FOR LEFT TURNS. One of the most dangerous turns to make is when you are driving up Brookline Blvd. from West Liberty Avenue and need to turn left on to Pioneer. It is hard to judge and hard to see oncoming cars sometimes. Making a left turn from ANY DIRECTION at that intersection is dangerous, and really needs to be addressed!
