Patch Poll: How Did You Carry Trick-or-Treat Candy?

Details about local trick-or-treat times in Dormont and Brookline.

What did you use to carry candy on trick-or-treat night? When I was a kid, it was mostly pillowcases or grocery bags, with the occasional pumpkin basket thrown in.

Next Wednesday, we'll get to see what kids are carrying these days (my guess is that it hasn't changed much).

Trick-or-treat in Dormont is Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. Members of the Dormont Volunteer Fire Department and the Dormont Police Department will be posted at intersections throughout the borough, making sure all goblins and princess brides are safe in their quests for candy.

The City of Pittsburgh, including Brookline and Beechview, also will hold trick-or-treat on Oct. 31 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

This Saturday, Oct. 27, Brookline Rec Center is holding a Halloween Party from noon to 2 p.m., followed by a Halloween parade on Brookline Boulevard.

Happy scares!

Lol! I remember carrying a plastic pumpkin basket for candy when I was a small child, while Mom or Dad carried a tote bag for us to empty it into when it was full. Pillow cases were carried whe we got a little older. And my Grandmother, who was an amazing seamstress, sewed each of us a "custom" Halloween themed heavy canvas bag when I was about 10 I think. Good memories!!
Times have changed. Most of the kids who trick or treat on my street for the last few years carry plastic or fabric grocery bags, or commercially bought decorated treat bags these days. And I see alot of "older" kids, 16, 17, 18 (maybe even older), trick or treaters. When I was growing up, most of us stopped trick or treating by the age of 14 or so., mainly because it wasn't "cool" to trick or treat anymore. I guess the promise of free candy and junk food nowadays is more motivation these days than it was back then. Of course, back in my day, people gave out apples, oranges and popcorn balls. and we didn't worry about pins or razor blades. Sigh. Times have changed.
Looking forward to seeing the kids come around this year and seeing who has the cutest and most creative costumes. Happy Halloween to all!

Bright Orange Plastic Pumpkin and when it got too full i dumped it in to the pillow case my dad was carring he had one marked cassie and one maked billy, just so we knew who's cany was who's even thought we went to the same houses. And when we got older we realized the pillow cases held a lot more, really came in handy for all the great candy you got. But janice is right when we went around it was a lot different than todays kids. boy the memories you have as a adult...makes one want to go back ;p

Thank Erin! This brought back many fond memories of trick-or-treating, from my childhood and the adult years since, watching the next generations enjoy this tradition!
And Cassie, I agree! Oh, to be a child again for just one day and relive the memories. Lol! Especially the one where my mummy costume had me trick-or-treating for saftey pins to secure the strips of white fabric on my costume! *chuckles* Now people have to be afraid of pins and such when they send their kids out. That year, we had to ask for them! Times have changed. But that memory will always be precious.
Thanks again Erin for this article and poll!

No problem! I never went out as a mummy, but I was a lamp one year, and that was a difficult costume. My parents had a GIANT lamp in the living room and when they replaced the shade, we rigged it up so I could wear it, with a little square cut out so I could see, and a flashlight inside so it lit up. I think everyone thought that costume was hilarious—except for me! I couldn't see a thing. People could have been taking my candy from me and I wouldn't have known!
