Once the site of a local florist’s shop, the storefront at 2895 West Liberty Avenue is now growing support for Barack Obama this election season.

Congressman Mike Doyle and the Obama for America Pennsylvania staff and volunteers held an event to celebrate the opening of the new campaign office Tuesday evening.

The most important aspect of the office is that it’s an information center, said Neighborhood Team Leader Ninamary Langsdale.

“If anyone is concerned about an issue, they will be able to come in and talk to a volunteer,” Langsdale said. “We're here to help. We will write to you, or talk to you, and explain the issues, many of which are quite complicated.”

Residents also can come to the office to register to vote, pick up an absentee ballot application, and continue to get information about the voter ID law.

It’s also the center for those who want to volunteer for the campaign by participating in a phone bank, canvasing neighborhoods with information, or data entry.

Several Obama supporters and volunteers were in attendance at Tuesday’s opening.

Wakanwa Nzambi, an Obama supporter, said he thinks the office is a wonderful thing to have in the South Hills, because it can help keep voters informed.

“One of the greatest things in America is that we can express our opinions freely, including those about the government,” he said. “The people here might not be able to get to an office in Pittsburgh, but here they can be encouraged to come out and become an empowered individual who can cast an informed vote.”

The office is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Nearby Obama campaign offices are located at 1105 East Carson Street and 1400 Smallman Street. For a full list, click here.

Nearby campaign offices for Presidential candidate Mitt Romney are located at 100 Fleet Street in Pittsburgh, 3500 Brooketree Lane in Wexford and at 24 North Maple Ave. in Greensburg. For a full list, click here.

Editor’s note: The last day to register to vote is Oct. 9, and the last day to apply for an absentee ballot is Oct. 30.

Does this mean this office will go away after the election. Whoever rented this space I bet didn't have them sign a one year lease like I'm sure I would have to. Did the borough do a complete inspection to make sure this place is safe? My concern is if the owner is holding these people to the same contract it would an American citizen...

Ed, Do you have any facts to support that this is a dive?

Jason, Romney did open an office in Dormont but he immediately sold it for a loss, took the tax write-off and moved the call center to India. Sorry.

Romney could always move into the old Rock n Roll Your Own smoke shop. Would give me something else to look at while stuck at the light besides the crazy lady screaming at everyone from the bench.

I hope they get to celebrate Obama's loss. This idiot is destroying this country. Another 4 years and he will complete the task.

No, signs aren't available directly from the office. They can be ordered through the campaign website, and the Allegheny County Democratic Committee will distribute them.
