Letter to the Editor: Deasy Congratulates Marathon Runners

State Rep. Dan Deasy, who represents Dormont, congratulates those who participated in the 2012 Pittsburgh Marathon.

First, I would like to congratulate all the runners who participated in the 2012 Pittsburgh Marathon.  What an incredible accomplishment. I would also like to commend The Marathon Committee, members of the Pittsburgh Police Department, City of Pittsburgh Public Works, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Pittsburgh Cares and everyone who was involved in making this year’s event simply TREMENDOUS!

This year’s marathon runners were, for the second year, routed through the West End Village, which is where my district office is located. Runners received an unprecedented welcome to this grand community as they turned off of Steuben Street onto Alexander and then onto South Main Street.

With the leadership of the West Pittsburgh Partnership, the Pittsburgh Musical Theater, numerous businesses from the Village and many community groups from the West End communities were part of a wonderful community festival that I am certain was one of the best along the marathon route. Runners were entertained by great music by Pittsburgh Musical Theater and the Elite Show Band, as well as the cheers of hundreds who lined the streets to welcome runners to our community.

Councilwoman Theresa Kail-Smith and I were honored and humbled to once again be part of this annual celebration which further united the West End communities. The West End is a tremendous hidden gem of the city with much potential. With the collaborative efforts of the community and elected officials, great things are happening in the Village that will benefit its neighboring communities and the City of Pittsburgh.

So, if you haven’t been to the West End or if it has been awhile since you have ventured over the Ohio River via the West End Bridge, I urge readers to visit. See the transformation that is taking place in the Village and visit the Pittsburgh Musical Theater, The Village Tavern, Steinway Pianos, the James Gallery, Meutzel’s Floral Shoppe, the Carnegie Library Branch, or one of the other great businesses in the Village!

State Representative

I only ran a leg of the relay but i had the pleasure of running through the west end. Very uplifting and fun. can't wait to do it again next year, although the desire to linger and enjoy the atmosphere probably won't help me improve my time. Thank you to everyone who turned out and to all the fantastic volunteers
